Advent calendar ideas for adults that are not twenty-four small chocolates
Ten formats that work for grown-ups, what each one actually costs in money and evenings, and the one design question that decides whether it gets abandoned on the 9th.
We spent a month building a 24-day advent calendar, which mostly meant discovering how adult advent calendars fail. They almost never fail on the 1st. They fail somewhere around the 8th or the 9th, and always for the same reason: nothing carries over. Day 7 has no relationship to day 6, so missing day 7 costs nothing, so day 8 gets missed too, and by the 12th the box is a box of things on a shelf.
That is the question to ask about any of the ideas below. If I skip a day, does anything break? If the honest answer is no, the calendar is a nice gesture with a short half-life. If the answer is yes — because the days add up to something — people finish it.
The ten formats, and what they really cost
1. A story told in instalments
A mystery, a serial, a set of letters. One envelope a day, five to fifteen minutes, and the December 24th envelope only makes sense if you opened the other twenty-three. This is the format with the best completion rate, because the structure does the work rather than your willpower.
Cost: a printer and twenty-four envelopes if you make it, or the price of a printable. Effort: one evening of printing, cutting and stuffing.
2. Twenty-four small bottles
Miniatures of gin, whisky, wine, beer, hot sauce, olive oil. Genuinely popular and genuinely expensive: twenty-four 50 ml spirit miniatures is comfortably a three-figure project, and the supermarket versions are the same four brands repeated.
Cheaper version that works better: twelve bottles, not twenty-four, and a note with each one about why you picked it.
3. A playlist a day
One song per door, each with a line about why. It is the format people actually engage with because it costs the recipient nothing to open. It is also one of the best-selling printable adult calendar formats on Etsy: a playlist calendar first listed in 2021 has picked up around forty thousand views, which for a five-dollar PDF is a lot of people looking for exactly this.
Cost: nothing. Effort: an afternoon, and it is a genuinely lovely gift if the twenty-four songs are about the person.
4. A book a chapter at a time
Photocopy or print a short novella and split it into twenty-four instalments. Dickens did it this way for a reason. Works best with something structurally episodic and out of copyright.
5. Twenty-four dates, not objects
Each door is a small plan: a film, a walk, the good bakery, an early night. The failure mode is ambition — if half the doors need three hours and a babysitter, the calendar becomes a source of guilt in the busiest month of the year. Rule of thumb: eighteen doors of ten minutes, six doors of an evening.
6. A skill in twenty-four steps
Knots, chess openings, cocktail technique, a language, the twenty-four muscles of the hand if that is who you are. Cumulative by construction, which is the property you want.
7. Twenty-four questions
One question a day, asked and answered over breakfast. For couples and for families with teenagers, this is the one that people report actually changed the month. Costs a piece of paper.
8. The reverse advent
One item a day into a box for a food bank, delivered before Christmas. Requires no craft skill and is the only one on this list where the 24th is better than the 1st.
9. Twenty-four things about the year
A photo, a ticket stub, a receipt from the good meal, one per day, sealed in envelopes. For a partner or a parent this is the highest-effort and highest-return idea here. Start it in October.
10. A puzzle that is one puzzle
Not twenty-four riddles, which is twenty-four disconnected things again. One puzzle with twenty-four pieces of evidence: a code, a map, a cipher, a case. The distinction sounds small and it is the whole difference between finishing and not.
What the market actually looks like, if you are thinking of buying one
We pulled the numbers off Etsy's own API while researching ours. For the phrase adult advent calendar printable there were 474 active listings, a median price of $4.93, and a top quartile at $6.99. The two most-viewed listings are a printable gingerbread village from 2017 and the playlist calendar mentioned above.
Two things follow from that. First, this is a cheap category, so a printable at five dollars is the norm and anything above about fifteen has to be a different kind of product rather than a nicer version of the same one. Second, the leaders are old. The gingerbread village has had nine Decembers to accumulate its views. That means the category rewards a format nobody else is doing far more than it rewards a prettier version of the format everybody is doing.
If you are making one yourself: the five practical rules
- Number everything in the corner. Small, grey, bottom outer corner, day and item: "D12 · 2". You will be sorting a hundred pieces of paper on a table at eleven at night and you do not want to have to read them to sort them.
- Design it to be printed in black and white. Colour advent calendars are printed at home by people whose printer is low on magenta. If your design depends on a warm cream background and a gold border, print one page in greyscale and look at it before you commit.
- Keep everything inside a 7.5 by 10 inch area. That fits inside both US Letter and A4 with a margin to spare, so one file works on both sides of the Atlantic and nothing falls off the edge.
- Use envelopes you already own. Standard small envelopes, and address labels if you want them numbered. Avery 5160 or 5163 sheets are cheap and mean you are not hand-lettering twenty-four times.
- Build in a way to catch up. Somebody will miss three days around the 14th. If missing three days makes day 17 incomprehensible, they will stop. A one-line recap on each day solves it completely.
Ours is the first idea on this list, built properly: Until Breakfast — a 24-day murder mystery advent calendar, $24.99. A clockmaker is dead, the pass is snowed shut, and the constable mails you her case file one envelope at a time. Eighty-four case documents, twenty-eight photographs, eight suspects, five to fifteen minutes a day, and two difficulty tracks in the same download so a family and a puzzle obsessive can run it side by side. It is ages twelve and up, one death, off the page, and the solution is sealed in its own file.
The one thing worth spending money on
Whatever format you pick, spend the money on the 24th. Most advent calendars taper: the last doors are the leftover chocolates. A calendar where the 24th is obviously the best door is a calendar people remember and ask for again, and it is the cheapest possible upgrade — you are not adding twenty-four good things, you are adding one.
